Look at What We Do!

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Montana’s first DAR historical markers were placed in 1908 for Spanish-American Veterans (Butte) and for the Lewis and Clark Expedition (Livingston). The most recent, placed in 2024, commemorates our Revolutionary War Patriots and was placed for America’s 250th Anniversary.

In total, Montana DAR has installed 78 historical markers of which 36 still stand; 43 have been lost or destroyed over the years. Some examples:
  • In 2021, the Silver Bow Chapter, Janice Hand, Regent, repaired and restored the 1908 Spanish—American War plot sitting between the St. Patrick’s and Mount Moriah Cemeteries and installed a kiosk recognizing its 87 veterans.
  • In 2020, Oro Fino Chapter, Veronica Bovee-Anderson, Regent, placed a marker recognizing the Pioneer Cabin in the original townsite of Helena. In the same year, the Mount Hyalite Chapter, Jodi Gorder, Regent, erected a monument to Bozeman's earliest pioneers at Bozeman’s historic Sunset Hills cemetery.
  • Catherine Lane, State Regent 2014-2016, placed a marker in 2019 recognizing the MT State Society Daughters who saved the historic Fort Benton blockhouse from destruction in 1908.
EDUCATION
  • Each year the MSSDAR awards its "Traveling Scholarship" to a student, funded equally by all the state chapters. Two chapters award their own scholarships.
  • Most all chapters sponsor American History Essay Contests and Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Contest.
PATRIOTISM
  • Montana Daughters give support to America’s service personnel at home and abroad through care packages, thank-you notes, and needed items.
  • Annually, we sponsor special programs promoting the Constitution during its official celebration week of September 17-23.
  • Chapters in towns with Naturalization Ceremonies actively participate with small patriotic gifts to new citizens and their children.
  • We honor service by presenting patriotic awards to deserving individuals including:
    • Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award
    • DAR Good Citizens awards and medals
    • ROTC medals
    • Community Service awards
